Clarification on how to use the Inventory feed type `Quantity` attribute

The Inventory feed type POST_INVENTORY_AVAILABILITY_DATA Quantity attribute applies only to inventory that is fulfilled by the seller.

If your inventory is fulfilled by Amazon, you cannot manually update the quantity by using the Quantity attribute. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) inventory is automatically updated by the Amazon fulfillment center that contains your merchandise.

If your inventory is fulfilled by Amazon and you enter a value in the Quantity column of the Inventory feed file:

  • Your shipment method changes from Amazon-fulfilled to seller-fulfilled by default.
  • A buyer can place orders on merchandise that you might not have locally (as merchant-fulfilled inventory).
  • The inventory that you have at a fulfillment center cannot be sold. This results in stranded inventory.

To reverse the change made to the shipment method, you must log in to Seller Central and change the listing type to FBA.

To learn how to get FBA inventory information, refer to the FBA Inventory API v1 Use Case Guide.
